It's been a while since we had a SPECIAL, but eat your heart out with Wayne Horse!

Sex is...

...a beautiful dance in a garden of roses. And the air tastes of milk. And the sky is full of beautiful birds. And they carry the most amazing paintings with their beak. And on the horizon you can make out a mystic castle, with a prices waving from one of the umpteen windows, and you are drunk.

What is the coolest assignment you ever did?

I made a video clip for german schlager singer Adrian Falk. We agreed that I would make the clip in exchange for a favor instead of working for money.
I did this because I was keen on making a proper german volksmusik video. It is a scene that I usually do not have much to do with. When i heard that the clip was to be broadcasted on the german volksmusic channel which only broadcasts in hospitals and retirement homes, it made my decision to do it very easy. I did not know Adrian very well back then, but over the years he became a friend of mine. The following year i came to live with him in his house in the german blackforest for a few days. We wentt to sip prossecco at the nude beach. It all seemed strange in the beginning, until i understood that this is the way that things are supposed to be.

Which art piece is your biggest inspiration?

There are lots of artpieces that i find very inspiring. I like the works of Paul mc Carthy. I was surprised when i saw his big sculpture of father christmas holding an ass plug in the rotterdam city center. I don't know if that was so inspiring, but very impressive for sure. Another Artist that amazes me is Tom Sachs. I just recently saw his short film 'colors'. I admire his way of choosing everything for a reason. No color is used for the way it looks, but for what it stands for. I like it when seemingly random decisions are backed with a solid reason. In the way i work i always try to find as many rules to what i do as i can. This way decisions come easy.

What is the least sexual thing you can think of?

A warm melon with a hole in it. The melon is filled with cream and the hole is decorated with soft ham.

I had an inspiring evening yesterday. A Street Art Masterclass to be exact. Although the term Street Art is up for some discussion. One of the speakers, Dongwei Su, suggested that Street Hacking might be a better term for it. People using their environment to come to new forms and works of art.

There were several guest speakers and it all was interesting, but what got me most was de item about augmented reality by Sander Veenhof. He creates virtual happenings and things to see all over the world. For example, he held an exposition in MOMA for which other people could send in their virtual art to show there. MOMA didn't know. Like they probably don't know that Sander built a 7th floor to the building for future expositions. Layers make it possible to create what you want, where you want! I would like a sun and beach in my room please ;)

Nicole Blommers, from Amsterdam Street Art, showed a couple of artists but I was mostly blown away by this video by BLU. Watch and agree.

Don't you love Cult Dealer Enzo their logo?! They do a great job bringing creatives together with each other and people with business knowledge. For a very small amount a month you can join everything their members organize and you are free to organize your own events in their building as well.

Yesterday I saw the coolest theater performance I'd seen in a while. BIMBO by Boogaerdt/ vdSchoot.

Back in the days porn was a personal pleasure, now it is everywhere. There is no turning on the tv without half naked women selling music, clothing, and even toothpaste and insurances on screen. Media don't show reality, reality gets created after what was shown. Women are photoshopped to look 'perfect' and sometimes even the models themselves don't look like their pictures.

BIMBO shows how we hardly react on the pretty extreme images we are shown. How companies use sex to sell their products, and how freaky plastic 'perfection' can get. The performance is mime, so no speaking just action and music. It was hard to get the "lick my pussy and my crack"-song out of our heads afterwards.

What made the performance even more interesting is the way it was presented. Not an ordinary stage and no chance to sit back and relax. A big boxingring-like stage was built, with the audience sitting around, their backs facing the stage. Watching the images on screen while having the actresses breath in your neck makes it all the more interesting. It makes it even more clear that what you see is not what you get.

Plaats Delict #6: Sex

Past friday was the opening of the new exhibition SEXXX in "de Paraplufabriek" in Nijmegen. An exposition with several artists showing their work related to this subject. As they describe it:

"Sex is a very personal matter but maybe as well the best selling product of our society nowadays. The expo show the diversity of the subject and the search for the balance between intimacy and extremes in sex." Does your work have a message?

I think my message is an invitation for an interaction, perhaps to make the viewer reflect, feel and thereby empathize with the theme. The common thread is visually saturating invitation for contemplation about more fundamental questions of current day issues. Even if I can not suggest a solution at least I have to put up a question.

What is your fascination for people having sex?

The reason why I deal with this topic in my art is because eroticism is rather unwelcome in the public sphere it is like going against the grain. Also I want to break my own barriers. In an overblown, commercialized and thereby distorted reality a few experiences, like sex for instance, still have the directness and authenticity. There is no spin doctor to implant us the opinion of our own sexual experience, in a way it makes it a secret garden of our consciousness.

What is your dream as an artist?

I don`t paint or draw fantasy world, I am more fascinated with understanding how the world works still I don`t have any grandiose illusions about changing anything. It is more the urge to create and the desire to find new ways of interpreting the world. In order to do so the first step toward the creation is observation. I feel that human creativity is central to our survival. I doubt everything all the time and try to be socially useful. Today we live in enterprise culture and nobody, not only artists, can count on stability.

How do you start a new piece? Where do you find the inspiration?

I make art out of everyday life based on material found from television, movies, people, books and other media, depicting themes such as estetics politics, porn, gym/fitness, consumer goods, internet images or from my photo-archive. I like to observe the different aspects of society: popular culture, power struggle, current political issues, globalisation and cultural clashes. With ironic and humoristic style, I carefully craft stories that are worthy of belief—a skill requiring intellectual sophistication, emotional sensitivity and reveal observation on the everyday reality. In that sense humor "relativizes" the tyranny of reality. Putting things into perspective is really important for everything.

On your website it says that your main goal in life after graduating is making the artwork for Laura Marling albums someday. Is that happening already?

Haha, no. Even if Laura herself would come to my door and ask me to do it, I still don't think I would have the confidence. (I would do it though. ... If she's reading this.) But I'm taking steps in the right direction. In some time the new cd of Nausica (http://www.myspace.com/nausicamusic) will be out and its cover is a poster I made for them.

What is the coolest assignment you did so far?

That's a good question! I guess it would be drawing every graduating Fashion student of the Utrecht School of the Arts in my gratuation year. This was for the program booklets of their graduation fashion show. I made over thirty portraits in less than two weeks. When doing it, it wasn't even that much fun, but it was the first time I saw my work in official print. A lot of it.

Also: my boyfriend VJ Glitterende Eenhoorn (http://cargocollective.com/kloppenburg) and I are a VJ duo now, and places now invite us to come VJ for them. I draw on an overhead projector at these occasions and that is very much fun to do, too.

Illustrating is nog the only thing you do. What else do you put out there?

I'm glad you ask (again!), because I just thought of another fantastic assignment I recently did!! My favorite movietheater in Utrecht, 't Hoogt, has got a window where people stand in line to buy tickets. In that place the theater promotes stuff like for example a film quiz they organize. I got to decorate the thing. I put a tree up there with actors made out of clay hanging from it, which fall from the tree and leave their name hanging in it. So, puppets!

Also, I paint. I made clothes for a long time until both my sewing machines passed away. I write a lot, but when I grew up that became mostly journals. Furthermore, I am now making books. So that's a bit more graphic designing, although I really don't pretend to be good at that. When I was a child, I used to make dollhouses. Yesterday I thought I might start doing that again. In conclusion: I like a lot of techniques.

Marleen is your real name. So why Menah?

The transformation of the name started in my family when I was very little. My niece used to call me 'Meen', then my sister added the 'ah' (including the 'h' for prestige, I think), then my best friend started calling me Menah as well. She introduced me to my first boyfriend as Menah. He didn't know my real name for months. So that's kind of how that happened. Being a nostalgic person, I made Menah the name of my work as well, so people keep calling me that. It feels familiar and informal, and that makes me happy.

How did you get inspired by the theme I gave you? "Pink hair, yellow noses"

I chose it because I wondered if, when I chose "pink hair, yellow noses", I would be drawing people with pink hair and yellow noses, or give in to the temptation of making a black and white drawing, just to be a rebel.

Then I asked myself in what situation someone might have pink hair and one or more yellow noses. That's how I came up with the beaten-up gay guy. That he was wearing a nice pink wig, and for that got punched on the eye. (In which case often part of the nose turns yellow.)Besides, I'll use any excuse to draw gay people, because they fascinate me. I don't really know why, but it could have something to do with how vulnerable gay people still are, because people might not accept the fact that they are gay, which amazes me. By the way, for this series I asked gay people to be my model. Some gay people reacted, but there were also straight people that sent their picture. I thought: if I want to talk about not discriminating based on sexual preference, I shouldn't do that either. So these people are real, some are gay, some are not, some are boys, some are girls, some are not. + Thank you to Falco, Femke, Frank, Linda, Nicolien & Cupid :-)

Last night the Jameson Film Experience took place in Amsterdam. They truly made it an experience by taking parts from the movie ("Drive", starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan) and bringing them to life at the entrance/ bar-room and during the movie.

We entered the room trough Nino's pizzeria, where 'he' gave us $100 bills for drinks from out of a briefcase. At the other side of the wall there were two naked ladies, who looked like the came right out of the stripclub in the movie.

During the movie red lights flashed whenever there was a large amount of blood on screen. Which there was. A lot. And more dollarbills fell out of the ceiling at the final scene.

Niels has been a fan of cartoons for years now. He customizes the classics and creates his own. What about him?

Where did your passion for Cartoons come from?
As a kid I started reading all of my dad's comics. Like Eppo, Mad Magazine, Asterix & Obelix. In the 80's my grandmother was one of the first to have cable, so I spent most of the weekends watching Sky Channel's 'Fun Factory'. During the week I tried to watch every other cartoon on television if my parents let me. I really digged into Tex Avery cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Droopy, but also liked watching Tom & Jerry, the smurfs, Captain Caveman and whatever I could get my eyes on.

Which character would you want to be in a next life?
I assume you mean a cartoon character.. Well, in that case I'm not so sure if I would like to be one. First of all I'd have to give up all of my freedom, since my creator decides what I'll be doing, wearing, talking and thinking about. I can also imagine that I won't be having any privacy, unless I choose to be a very unsuccessful character. But then my life would be boring as hell. No, seriously, if for some reason I wouldn't have a choice.. I guess I'd go for Douwe Dabbert. His life seems quite adventurous, carrying around this magic knapsack from which only he can take items that suit any kind of situation. And I've always dreamt about having a Dodo as a companion.

What are you currently working on?

I'm currently working on a new series of collages I started last year. Since then I haven't had time to finish any of them.. I also have to come up with an idea to turn an object into a character. Together with a group of fellow artists from my agency Shop Around I'll be attending the BLOOOM art show in Cologne, under the name 'Popjugend shows character'.

Besides FUCKEDup art, of course ;), what would be the greatest place for you to show your work?
In case of the internet, I really dig blogs like High Fructose, Fecal Face and Juxtapoz. In real life, any gallery in any major city of the world ;)

Uncle George. An interesting name for a female illustrator. So I wanted to find out who was behind these drawings.

Who the f*ck is uncle George?

I’m an illustrator, designer, painter, HKU-graduate from Hilversum, the Netherlands, who likes color (but loves black and white even more). Unlike what my name suggests, I’m not a fat, elderly and bearded man, but a twenty something year old female, also known as Marloes Pijfers. And in my free time I’m also a pretty awesome dancer if I may say so.

Who would be the perfect 'aunt'? And why?

Tall, blonde, blue eyes, good shape, good sense of humor, enjoying long walks on the beach and romantic evenings by the fireplace, etc. etc. - Just kidding, I’m actually pretty independent, as well as in my working- as in my personal life. But I would like to do more collaborations in the near future though.

Your workplace, what does it look like?

Like Albert Einstein said: “If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” So I would have to say mine’s pretty cluttered. I generally hate messes, but I just can’t work on an empty desk. I collect everything that I might need for my drawing around me: pens, pencils, markers, paint, different kinds of paper, my tablet and scanner... And most of the times some inspirational books.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

I have a shitload of art books on my bookshelf, a humongous folder on my desktop called “nice for later” in which I collect all kinds of inspirational pictures, artworks and texts... And I love visiting museums: I always feel kind of refreshed after visiting an exhibition. And I would have to say that one of my biggest heroes at the moment is Marc Johns. I just adore his ridiculous sense of humor...Go check him out!

What did you think of the theme I gave you? "Dreams come true" Was it easy to get inspired?

It wasn’t that hard to get inspired, but I think it turned out a bit cliché. But I don’t mind though, I like a little bit of cliché every now and then.

55DLS is an Italian street wear company who makes funky clothes. They now have a new project: Kids in Italia. It's an exploration into Italian artists. They made a series of video's (together with VICE), which starts with the following two.

Lele Saveri is an Italian photographer who divides his time between Milan and New York. Working around the world he has shot for the likes of Rolling Stone, NME and VICE. The film follows him as he explores and shoots traditional Sicilian festivals for his forthcoming book.
Giulia Centofante and Elisa Bee are DJs from Milan. ‘Giulia From Above’ and ‘Elisa Bee’ play together as a rare female duo in a scene dominated by male DJs. As we follow them in the build up to a party they’re putting on in the biggest club in Milan, the girls give us their insights and motivations from this unique perspective.

Interview with Sander Reijgers

During a late evening phone call,Sander and I talked about his latest project, the famous sex dollsand the Dutch blog: Geenstijl.

Sander currently has an exposition at“Liefhertje en de Grote Witte Reus” ("DearDeer and the BigWhite Giant", for the non-Dutch) in the Hague. He is showing one ofhis latest projects “Kunst hoort aan een spijker” (“Art issupposed to hang on a nail”). He created a lot of very colorful nailswhich he puts into other objects like abaseball bet, frames and a socker ball. Or simply hangs on the wall.

The story behind the nails is a funnyone, which starts with Sanders graduating project. For this project, hewas inspired by the book: Malady of death by Marguerite Duras. In which themain character uses sex to feel alive. Sander turned it around into howto add life to dead objects. He first made a bag out of a sexdoll,and later that became jackets and socker balls. Sex sells, which madethat he got a lot of media attention for his project. Like the Dutchblog: Geenstijl. They posted his work and heaps of reactionsfollowed. One guy said: “Kunst hoort aan een spijker” (“Art issupposed to hang on a nail”). Sander took that very litteral. Hetransformed this comment into the work he is currently exposing.

Sander gets inspired by the thingsaround him. Like how the nike-wearing Moroccan kids in Holland broughthim to redesign nike jackets by combining them with Arafat Scarfs. He likes to absorb information from his environment. That is what he appreciates about theinternet, you can see what people think about your work. Interactwith them.

Next to being an artist, Sander also teaches visual arts in Utrecht. Although he isn't a fulltime artist yet, he would love to become a world wide famous artist one day. Which I hope he will, because I think he is really driven and talented!

What I was also dying to know (and I assume a lot op people with me) is how he got all the sex dolls for his dollproject. At first, Sander bought the dolls himself. But off course it became a bit awkward to buy a couple of sex dolls every week ;) So his girlfriend wrote a letter to Paul de Leeuw (a famous Dutch tv personality). Sander was invited to the show to explain why he needed more dolls, and got 50 from Paul. All new ones off course.

Nikki

Nikki is a huge animal lover and a very sweet girl. Her work is often made in candy colors and with a touch of humor to them.

What makes you draw so many animals?

I love all their different shapes and colors, they’re so different from humans. But I guess you could say that humans are just naked monkeys, which I think is kind of boring if you compare them to animals like the anglerfish or the anteater. I love the way animals can seem human in the things they do, the way they act around each other. I wrote my graduation essay about the human-animal relationship and how we like human-like animals (put clothes on them, talk to them or use them in art as a metaphor for human behavior). What also fascinates me is how they live in areas where humans can’t possibly live and how they have adapted to their environment. Like deep down in the sea or in really cold places. I care a lot about animals, and I think that shows in my work.

Which artist would you like to do a collaboration with? On what kind of assignment?

That is a really difficult question. Nobody famous comes to mind to be honest. I always love working with my friends. Rosanne Groeneweg for example. We would make very weird personal art in whatever technique we want, bringing our imagination to life. But now that I think about it, I really admire Methane Studios. It would be really cool if I could make some gig posters with them. They designed for Dave Matthews Band, Wilco, Kings of Leon, Eric Clapton, Sonic Youth and much more. I’d be so happy if I could design just concert posters for a living! Especially in the way they do. I think they get a lot of freedom in making designs.

What is the coolest assignment you did so far?

I think assignments where you get a lot of freedom are the coolest. So far, my biggest personal project was my graduation project for the Catboat in Amsterdam. The Catboat is a cat shelter on a boat in one of the canals of Amsterdam. I drew all their permanent cats, which can’t be placed with other people because they’re wild or traumatized. I made a ‘portrait’ of each cat and their personality. I was really surprised I wasn’t tired of drawing cats after a few months.

What is your inner animal?

Why is the first animal I thought of a sloth? Maybe because I like to procrastinate when I’m not inspired or the job is difficult. But when the deadline comes closer I transform into a fast dolphin. I like dolphins because they’re so awfully cliché and smile all the time. I guess comparing myself to an animal I call cliché is not very good. So I’ll be a sea lion, they’re really cool too. I’ll be a sloth sea lion!

What did you think of the theme I gave you? "Dragqueen of the jungle" Was it easy to get inspired?

It was really easy! I actually work at a gay magazine called Expreszo, so I’ve drawn a fair share of gay people. I never drew a gay animal before though. At least not on purpose. I guess the king of the jungle is the lion and their mane are perfect for a drag queen hairstyle, so that fits the theme nicely. I like lions. Although I guess I like every animal. If you’d ask me which animal I don't like I’d probably say giraffes. I don’t really know why. Maybe because they’re so tall I can’t relate to them at all. But now I feel sorry for insulting the entire race of giraffes, so I threw in a giraffe in my drawing. Sorry Giraffes! I guess the lion and giraffe are more savanna animals, but let’s just pretend they’re jungle animals.

Tokyo rising with Pharrell

This is something I love. A brand that pays attention to art and social issues. Palladium Boots made a great special about Tokyo, with Pharrell. For whom Tokyo is his second home. It is a special of 5 episodes which you can watch online at www.palladiumboots.com.

They show interviews with several artists, designers and activist about Tokyo and the Tsunami from this year, and the impact it has on the city. It is really cool to see what a big space the Japanese government built under the city to store water in case of a new tsunami and/ or floods.

They also show a rockin' underground performance by the Japanese electro-pop group Trippple nipples that makes you wish you were there.
